September 2011 BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE The MVNA members pictured above took time off from their “summer vacation” to volunteer a few hours to help our State House of Representative Jose Menendez’s staff prepare for their annual “Back-to-School Supply Drive”. We had a wonderful turn out and it wasn’t work, it was play.     Representative Menendez has thanked us and now I would like to thank all the volunteers who donated their time for this very worthwhile event.  It was fun!

PTA MEMBERSHIP & BOX TOPS It is time to renew your MVE/PTA membership.  It is only $5.00 per person and you do not have to attend meetings, nor do you need to have children enrolled in school.  The PTA uses these funds to pay the bus drivers for field trips. The funds all go back to the students.  We will have applications at our September 27th meeting.   Remember to save your pink “Box Tops for Education” coupons located on Betty Crocker, Ziploc, Nestle, Land O Lakes, Hefty and many other products.  The coupons are worth 10 cents each and MVE redeems them for much needed sports equipment.  We have a collection jar available at our sign-in desk or you can drop the coupons off at the school office.

SEPTEMBER MEETING Our next meeting will be held September 27th at 7:00 pm in the Meadow Village Elementary School Cafeteria.   Our special guest speakers will be Councilman Ray Lopez and State Representative Jose Menendez. Other special guests attending include Raul Zamora (District 6 Administrative Assistant); City Code Compliance Officer Linda Pressley; and SAFFE Officer Vincent Cano. Also, if you are interested in running for a MVNA office this is an important meeting.  Refreshments will be served. Please join us.

Check out our Blog Thanks to Lora Eckler, MVNA still has our very own Blog!  Check us out at: http://mvna78227@blogspot.com/.  Important information and upcoming events will be updated as we get them.  So check us out often.  A lot of events are happening in the early to mid-part of each month and by the time our Newsletters are delivered to your home the event has passed.
Our Newsletters will be posted and available for all to see.  We also have pictures and you never know when your face will appear on our blog.

BOOK SALE It is time to start thinking about the “Friends of the Library” Book Sale.  The semi-annual Book Sale is scheduled for Friday, November 4th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and November 5th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Henry B. Guerra Library.  Again, book donations are badly needed.  Funds from the sale go directly back into the Guerra Library for items needed that are not in the city budget. Donations can be dropped off at the library or can be picked up by calling Delores Huber at 673-1088.  If you would like to become a “Friend” you can get information from the library or call Delores Huber.

NEW BUSINESS MEMBERS One of our new Business Members is Angel Blooms Florist located at 2026 SW Loop 410, (next to Lucy’s Cake Shop)  The owner, Estela Puente can be reached at 670-9996 or visit her on her website at www.angelbloomsflorist.com. Angel Bloom’s motto is “Flowers for All Occasion”. Please call Angel Blooms Florist the next time you need flowers. --------------------------------------------------------------------
Another new Business Member is Slim Roberts Pest Control.  Slim has been in the pest control business for many years and also does home inspections.  You can reach him at 831-7994. He sprays both inside and/or outside and his sprays are pet friendly.  Slim guarantees his work and has worked in our neighborhood for many years.
Please support our “Business Members”.

FOOD BANK Please don’t forget our Food Bank drive contest sponsored by Texas State Representative Jose Menendez.  The contest ends on November 18th.   We won the contest the last 2 years in competition with other neighborhood associations and we would like to see our Association win again.  For every $1.00 we donate, 10lbs of food can be purchased, That is why we have again decided to collect only money and not canned goods.  If you can’t make it to our meetings, you can send a check to our Post Office Box (listed below) or call 670-9710 for pick-up.  Your donation of any amount will be appreciated.  Last year we raised $1,100.00 and that purchased 11,000 pounds of food.            Let’s do it again!

MEADOW VILLAGE ELEMENTARY Because of budget cuts, volunteers are needed to help Meadow Village Elementary School keep their Library open. You can set your own schedule and your duties would involve scanning books in and out and doing a little shelving when there are no students in the Library.  Contact the school at 397-0650.   MVES also needs donations.  Last year they were able to give away daily prizes to students. They cannot do it this year due to budget constraints. Prizes needed include small items from the dollar stores, convention booths, etc.  Everything is welcomed.  They also need cash donations to purchase the “dog tags” that the children love.  The school gives the dog tags for “character awards” such as good citizenship, attendance, participation, improvement, etc.  Please help support Meadow Village Elementary School.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT Cable Westwood Neighborhood Association is hosting a “National Night Out” on October 4th in the parking lot at Cable Elementary School, 1706 Pinn Rd. from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  This will be a Pot Luck Event.  Games and awards are planned for all ages.  For further information please call Bonnie Weed, President of Cable Westwood Neighborhood Association at 675-2329.

Meadow Way closed till 9/14/2011

Closure of Meadoway for Gas installation

To all:
Please see the note from the contractor below as to the construction at the Meadow Way @ Marbach Road intersection. The contractor will be providing the same detour for those seeking access to Marbach Road as he did several weeks ago for other water work that was performed there in the past.

As for motorists traveling east and westbound on Marbach Road seeking access to Meadow Way the contractor will be providing signs.

The installation of the gas system will require us to close Meadoway on Thursday morning and the rest of the week. This street shall remain closed  till September 14, 2011
